Temporomandibular joint syndrome relates to swollen or inflamed joint that connects mandibles to skulls. Pain is experienced in the jaw in this disease. Sometimes difficulty is experienced in opening and closing the mouth. The face may also become swollen. There are various reasons behind this disease. Clenching or grinding of the joint may be the first reason behind the damage of the joint. Facing abnormality in the joint’s shape may be another reason. The dislocation of the joint and rheumatoid arthritis may be other reasons. Some signs are exposed when a human is affected by the TMJ disease.

Having pain in the jaw and in ears are the primary symptoms for the syndrome. Another symptom is headache which comes with a stiff and swollen jaw. Teeth problems may occur. People who used braces in the past are more likely to suffer this disorder too. There are several ways to deal with this dysfunction. TMJ surgery is one of these ways. But it should be conducted in serious condition. Generally TMJ surgery is done when pain becomes unbearable. But in the preliminary stage the syndrome can be treated with proper medication. Biofeedback headband measures and reduces one’s subconscious grinding and clenching of his or her teeth, termed as bruxism. Biofeedback headband also reduces headache. Anti-inflammatory drugs and muscle relaxants can also be used for the treatment of TMJ. Proper medication can be a good way to get rid of the swollen jaw. Pain killers are not that much effective in this treatment. Stress busters can also be taken as stress is very harmful for this disease.
